What Is Coronary Heart Disease?

Coronary heart disease, or CHD, is a medical condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries, which restricts blood and oxygen flow to the heart. It is also referred to as coronary artery disease. If coronary heart disease goes untreated, it may cripple the heart and lead to heart failure, as the heart cannot pump a sufficient amount of blood for your body. After some time, the plaque can break open causing a blood clot to form. Once the clot becomes larger it can entirely stop blood flow to the coronary artery, which may cause a heart attack. If not treated fast enough, the heart muscle will begin to die and lead to major complications or even death. Currently CHD is the most common cause of death in the US.
